JaqEngine development

Project: Designing a new combustion engine

Modesi is the main development partner of Valcon Motor Company (VMC). VMC is developing a new type of internal combustion engine: the JaqEngine. This engine is based on an alternative mechanical working principle (wobble-disc). This engine has a couple of very important advantages compared to the conventional Otto-engine. The picture below shows both wobble-discs and opposed pistons architecture of the engine.

Variable Compression Ratio (VCR)

The jaqEngine has the ability to vary the compression ratio by 8 to 22 bar. This is important in order to optimise the efficiency of the current generation combustion engines. Until now it is very difficult to apply VCR in the conventional engine architecture. The jaqEngine operates according to the 2-stroke principle. Therefore the architecture of the jaqEngine is relatively easy. Every negative aspect of 2-stroke engines have been eliminated, the advantages of a 2-stroke engine remain. These advantages include a better combustion process, lower internal friction and high power density. The improvement of efficiency is estimated around 30% to 50%.

Multi-fuel

Without changes to the mechanism of the jaqEngine the engine is able to combust different types of fuels like petrol, diesel and hydrogen. The combustion process for petrol combustion normally differs from that of diesel engines.

Hot-spot

The main technical advantage of the jaqEngine is the fact that there is no hot-spot in the combustion area. In the conventional Otto-engine the main hot-spot are the exhaust-valves. Due to this high temperature the fuel-air mixture will spontaneously start to combust. This effect is known as Knocking.
